PRESIDENT Marcos Jr. has designated a military official supervising the education and training of soldiers as the new head of the Philippine Marine Corps.

Maj. Gen. Charton Sean Gaerlan assumed command as Marine chief in rites presided over by Navy chief Vice Adm. Adeluis Bordado last Monday at the Navy headquarters in Manila.

Gaerlan, a member of the Philippine Military Academy class of 1989, was the commander of the AFP Education, Training and Doctrine Command prior to his designation as Marine commandant.

Gaerlan has held other key positions in the military, including assistant AFP deputy chief of staff for intelligence, commander of the 3rd Marine Brigade, Marine inspector general, Naval Forces Western Mindanao Command deputy commander, and deputy commander of the 2nd Marine Brigade.

Bordado said the past positions held by Gaerlan prepared the latter “to become the mature and competent leader he is now.

“His leadership capabilities, management skills, and excellent academic background paved for numerous opportunities that shaped his agility in decision-making. I believe these will allow him to lead the Marines well,” said Bordado.

Gaerlan took over from Col. Raul Caldez, who has been serving as the corps’ officer-in-charge for more than a month now.

Caldez held the top Marine post, in concurrent capacity as Marine deputy commandant, last July 13 when Marine commandant Maj. Gen. Nestor Herico bowed out of the service upon reaching the retirement age of 56.

Marine Brig. Gen. Cuison, of the PMA class 1990, took over as the new commander of the Naval Reserve Command also last Monday.

Cuison replaced Col. Simplitius Adecer, who took over as OIC of the NRC, in concurrent capacity as the command’s deputy commander, last July 28 upon the retirement of Rear Adm. Dorwin Jose Legaspi.

Cuison was assigned as the AFP deputy inspector general prior to his assignment as NRC commander.
