Former poll chief Melo, 88

FORMER Commission on Elections chairman Jose Melo became the second ex-poll chief to pass away this year after Sixto Brillantes Jr.

According to COMELEC spokesman James Jimenez, they have been informed of the passing of Melo late Sunday at the age of 88.

“Sad news tonight. Just received word that Chairman Jose A.R. Melo, former SC Justice, and the COMELEC Chairman who oversaw the country’s transition to full automation from 2008 to 2010, has passed away,” said Jimenez in his Twitter account.

The cause of Melo’s death is still unknown.

His death comes nearly two months since Brillantes succumbed to the coronavirus disease in August.

Melo was appointed COMELEC chief in January 2008, replacing Benjamin Abalos. He resigned in January 2011 and was succeeded by Brillantes.
