FIL-AM Shiloh Corrales-Nelson topped the women’s hammer throw in the Triton Invitational meet in San Diego, California yesterday (Saturday in the US) in a new national record of 50.63 meters at the University of California-San Diego track oval.
She set the new Philippine standard on her sixth and last throw, shattering the eight-year-old national mark of 50.55 meters set in the Asian track and field championships in 2013 in Pune India, the website pinoyathletics.info reported.
A member of the University of California-Irvine track squad, Nelson, the granddaughter of 1962 Jakarta Asian Games gold medalist and latest Philippine Sports Hall of Famer Rogelio Onofre, also placed second in the shot put with a heave of 12.89 meters.
Meanwhile, Olympic sprint hopeful Kristina Knott clocked 11.35 seconds in both the heats and finals of the women’s 100-meter run to place ninth in the star-studded Miramar Invitational meet at the Ansin Sports Complex in Hollywood, Florida yesterday (Saturday in the US).
After placing eighth overall in the preliminary heats, Knott wound up in the same spot in the main finals heat won by American sensation Sha-Carri Richardson, who overcame a bad start and ran away from the pack in ruling the race in a 2021 season-best of 10.72 seconds in the World Athletics silver tour event.
