THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded fewer volcanic earthquakes in Mount Bulusan in Sorsogon, but it remains restive.

In a 24-hour observation report, Phivolcs said there were 69 volcanic earthquakes, including 56 volcanic tremors which lasted for 19 minutes, from 5 a.m. Monday to 5 a.m. yesterday.

During the previous 24-hour period, 106 volcanic earthquakes were recorded, including 48 volcanic tremors that lasted for 20 minutes.

Phivolcs said plumes which drifted northwest reached as high as 750 meters, from the previous 500 meters.

It also said the volcano emitted 4,627 tons of sulfur dioxide.

Phivolcs said Bulusan Volcano remains restive as degassing from its summit vents continues. Alert Level 1 (low-risk unrest) remains declared in the area.

Bulusan Volcano had phreatic or steam-driven eruptions on June 5 and 12, spewing ash that affected many barangays.

Ricardo Jalad, executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, urged residents to remain vigilant due to the possibility of more phreatic eruptions.

Jalad, asked if the displaced residents have returned home, said, “What I know is not yet.”

Jalad, concurrent administrator of the Office of Civil Defense, said the area remains dangerous.

“Earthquakes are still being recorded, and (volcano) degassing continues,” he said.

“It’s still risky (in the area), there’s still a possibility or eruption,” he added.

On Monday, Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said it was possible Bulusan will have another phreatic eruption, based on its “character.”

The Department of Social Welfare and Development said affected residents have received some P1.64 million worth of assistance such as family food packs, hygiene kits and other relief items from government and private partners and organizations. — With Jocelyn Montemayor
