THE Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning the public against using a brand of baby swipes, “Watsons Love My Little Ones Hand and Mouth Baby Soft Wipes,” that it said does not have a “certificate of product notification” from the agency.

A “certificate of product notification” is used for cosmetic products. It is equivalent to the “certificate of product registration” for medicine and food products.

The FDA said the potential health hazards from the unregistered baby swipe brand may come from ingredients that are not allowed to be part of a cosmetic product, or from the contamination of heavy metals.

“Since the abovementioned unauthorized cosmetic product has not gone through the notification process of the FDA, the agency cannot assure their quality and safety,” said the FDA.

“The use of substandard and possibly adulterated cosmetic products may result in adverse reactions including, but not limited to, skin irritation, itchiness, anaphylactic shock, and organ failure,” it added.

The agency directed establishments not to distribute the swipe and local government units to ensure that the product is not made available in the market or areas of their jurisdiction. — Gerard Naval
