SOCIAL media giant Facebook recently took down three FB accounts that used the name of PNP chief Gen. Camilo Cascolan for swindling and other crimes, the PNP said yesterday.
PNP spokesman Col. Ysmael Yu said the accounts under the names “Camilo Pancratius Pikoy Cascolan,” “Camilo P. Cascolan,” and “Camilo Cascolan” were shut down by FB on the request of the police force,
Yu said cybercrime investigators have traced the bogus accounts to online swindling and estafa cases, mostly solicitation of funds in the guise of social welfare and humanitarian projects.
Brig. Gen. Marvin Manuel Pepino, chief of the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group, said FB accounts misrepresented the pages as owned by the PNP chief.
“These fake accounts have been active in social networks enticing Facebook users to donate funds purportedly to purchase computer tablets for students in urban poor communities for online classes,” said Pepino.
The Alliance of Concerned Teachers has launched a case-build up against the persons behind the three fake accounts and asked FB to take down these pages.
Pepino said four persons of interest have been subpoenaed to appear before the regional field units of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group as part of the ongoing investigation.
