FISHERMEN and the owner of the fishing vessel FB Gem-Ver have received full compensation from the owner of the Chinese vessel which rammed their boat and abandoned them near Recto Bank in the West Philippine Sea nearly three years ago.

Justice Undersecretary Adrian Sugay said the Filipino fishermen and owners of MV Gem-Ver received the P6 million payment last month for damages incurred.

“Full compensation has already been made in favor of the vessel owner and the fishermen. Payment was received 16 May 2022,” Sugay said.

On June 9, 2019, MV Gem-Ver was anchored near Recto Bank when it was rammed by Yuemaobinyu 42212, a Chinese vessel which abandoned the fishermen who were later rescued by Vietnamese fishermen.

The cost of repair, lost income, wages of the crew, and moral damages was estimated to reach P12 million but compensation was lowered P6 million after several rounds of negotiations.
