FIFTEEN people died while two others were injured after the truck they were riding in fell into a deep ravine yesterday in Mabinay town in Negros Oriental.

Police said the incident occurred at 1:46 p.m. in Barangay Bulwang.

The truck came from La Libertad town, also in Negros Oriental. It was en route to Barangay Dawis in Bayawan City, also in Negros Oriental, where the victims were supposed to buy livestock like pigs, cows and goats for slaughtering, said Mabinay police chief Maj. Nelson Lamoco.

“The victims are all livestock businessmen, livestock buyers,” said Lamoco said in a radio interview.

The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle after its brake malfunctioned. The vehicle then fell into the ravine.

“Fourteen initially died and three were brought to the hospital,” said Lamoco. The 14 died on the spot, 10 of them were immediately identified.

Three occupants survived, including the driver, although they suffered serious injuries. They were brought to the Mabinay Community Hospital.

“We later received information that one of them (the three injured) also died, so the number of fatalities is now at 15,” said Lamoco.

Police said the driver will be facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, multiple serious physical injuries and damage to property.

Police are conducting investigating whether the truck is allowed to carry passengers in its cargo area.
