THE PNP said the explosion near the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Paranaque City that injured a scavenger last Saturday afternoon was a case of self-accident.

In a statement last Tuesday, the PNP said an investigation into the incident showed no presence of explosive materials and should not be a security concern.

“The incident was not a result of any criminal activity, but rather an unfortunate self-accident,” the PNP said in a statement.

The explosion was caused by a vape canister that was found by scavenger Romeo Soriano along Ninoy Aquino Avenue. The canister exploded, causing burns on Soriano.

“After a thorough inspection of the site, no evidence of explosive materials was discovered,” the PNP said.

“The injuries sustained by the 64-year-old victim were the result of an explosion caused by his own actions,” the PNP added.

It said the victim attempted to open the pressurized vape canister “by applying heat, which unfortunately led to the explosion.”

“We would like to emphasize that this incident is not connected in any way to the recent alert issued by civil aviation authorities at a regional airport,” the PNP said.

The PNP assured the public that it “continues to ensure the safety and security of all citizens and will provide updates as necessary.”

The incident occurred after a Molotov bomb exploded at the NAIA parking area last September 23, damaging three vehicles. The man who hurled the bomb, Renieldo dela Peña Perez, was arrested five days later.
