PRESIDENT Duterte has signed into law RA 11470 establishing the National Academy of Sports (NAS) aimed at developing more world-class Filipino athletes and sustaining the gains the country achieved in last year’s 30th Association of Southeast Asian Games.

Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go, who chairs the Senate committee on sports, yesterday said Duterte signed the bill into law in simple ceremonies in Davao City last Tuesday.

Go said the bicameral conference committee report of the measure, based on Senate Bill No. 1086 and House Bill No. 6312, was ratified by the Senate last May 11, followed by the House of Representatives last May 19.

Go said that with the establishment of the NAS in close proximity to world-class facilities at New Clark City, student-athletes can enjoy a level of training at par with the best in the world and be given quality education.

Under the law, the NAS will develop and implement a secondary education program, integrated with a special curriculum on sports, targeting young Filipinos with the talent and desire to develop further their sporting skills.

Full scholarships will be offered to qualified natural-born secondary school Filipino students.

The law requires that the main campus of the NAS shall be established at the existing New Clark City Sports Complex in Capas, Tarlac which will be equipped with the necessary sports facilities, housing, and other amenities according to current international standards.

School buildings with sufficient number of classrooms and facilities shall also be constructed at the complex.

The academy will be attached to the Department of Education and will be run in close coordination with the Philippine Sports Commission.

The academy will approve the hiring of licensed foreign coaches, trainers and consultants duly certified as necessary by PSC to ensure the international competitiveness of the students.

The Philippines hosted the 30th Southeast Asian Games last December and emerged as the overall champion with 149 gold medals.
