PRESIDENT Duterte has approved proposals to hire more public school teachers and make use of technology to improve the quality of basic education, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo, concurrent presidential spokesman, said yesterday.
Panelo said Education Secretary Leonor Briones presented to the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday night the status of the public education system and what the Department of Education (DepEd) intends to do raise its quality.
He said Briones reported that the DepEd is providing free education to 27.2 million learners, noting that access to education has been addressed.
He said the President approved DepEd’s recommendation to improve curriculum for students who want to pursue education, to create more plantilla positions for teachers, produce a communication plan on quality education, and harness the use of technology to educate more students, educators and leaders.
The DepEd is reviewing the effectiveness of K to 12 basic education program which was implemented in 2012 amid concerns that the curriculum had not been effective in providing students knowledge and skills that could help them seek employment later on.
