AMID threats from the Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines Inc. (PHAPI), Health Secretary Francisco Duque III yesterday urged the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) to hasten the reimbursement of hospital claim “with sufficient documentation.”

In a virtual media forum, Duque said he state-run health insurance agency has the funds to pay the claims.

“It is sufficiently funded,” said Duque, chairman of the PhilHealth board.

But Duque defended PhilHealth in terms of withholding payment for claims with insufficient supporting documents.

“It is difficult to pay money from the system, where contributions are hard earned money, without ascertaining that the documents are valid, and went through adjudication process,” he said.

Earlier, PHAPI president Dr. Jose Rene de Grano said that a number of private hospitals are not keen on renewing their accreditation with PhilHealth which still owes them some P20 billion in unpaid claims from last year alone.

Senators, on Tuesday, already urged PhilHealth to improve its snail-paced reimbursement processing of claims.
