AS far as Senate minority leader Franklin Drilon is concerned, Vice President Leni Robredo is the most qualified person to be the country’s next president.
In an interview with ANC yesterday, Drilon said the Liberal Party will support whatever decision Robredo will make as to next year’s national elections.
Drilon is LP vice chairman and Robredo is the chairman.
“Right now, there is no question Vice President Leni Robredo, to us, is the most qualified to be the next president,” Drilon said.
“We will support her but the matter of running is a personal decision and up to this point Vice President Leni Robredo has not decided to cast her hat in the national political race. That is where it is today. Those statements are really political in nature,” he added.
Robredo has said she is open to running for president next year but expressed preference for a local government post instead and concerns about a lack of funds.
She served as congresswoman of Camarines Sur before winning as vice president in the 2016 polls.
Robredo has not directly answered questions on whether she is eyeing the presidency, only saying her current priority is to help in the government’s COVID-19 pandemic response.
Drilon also said the LP has yet to come up with an official position on whether to support Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso if he decides to seek a higher office in next year’s elections.
On reports that the LP will support Moreno, he said: “I am vice chairman of the Liberal Party. I have heard of this. That the Liberal Party has taken an official position? No. We haven’t met to discuss this. Maybe we should in order to discuss this.”
Moreno has said he does want to think about politics “for now.”
