THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on Wednesday announced the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) System is ready for the coming schoolyear and is just awaiting the pronouncements of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Emerging Infectious Diseases.

DOST Sec. Fortunato de la Peña, interviewed by the hosts of Laging Handa public briefing, said the PSHS can adapt whether the IATF will allow face-to-face learning or insist on purely distance learning.

“If they will not allow face-to-face classes, then we will have to do it via distance learning materials — both electronic and printed. The problem on equipment like computers, laptops can be solved. We can provide those who do not have yet. This is a relatively small percentage at this point,” he explained.

De la Peña said PSHS enrollees who reside in remote areas also present a different problem under a distance learning system.

“Those living in areas where connectivity is difficult or not assured, then we will be forced to use printed materials. We will make sure these are delivered to their specific locations,” he said.

Should the IATF allow face-to-face interactions at some point, he said the PSHS will go to blended learning, a combination of face-to-face learning in the classrooms and distance learning mode.

Because of safety and health protocols, De la Peña said only 50 percent of students per class will be admitted into their designated classrooms.

“We will allow only 15 students per class and the other half will be doing distance learning.

They will be alternating in cycles over two weeks each. But if it is easier to do it on a per month basis, we will also do that,” the DOST chief said.
