Don’t overdo swimming amid extreme heat — DOH

WITH Filipinos usually turning to pools and beaches to beat the summer heat, the Department of Health (DOH) yesterday warned the public against overdoing their swimming activities.

In an online media forum, DOH – Health Environment Division chief Dr. Rosalind Vianzon said swimming in pools and beaches to douse extreme heat should not mean that it can be unlimited.

“Swimming is actually cooling to the body. It is going to be helpful to cool you down.

However, it is also quite a strenuous activity so we shouldn’t overdo swimming,” Vianzon said.

Swimming for an extended period, she said, can weaken the body due to fatigue. “Once in a while, you should take a rest in between strokes,” said Vianzon.

Vianzon also said the public must avoid swimming during times when the sun is at its hottest.

“Don’t stay under the hot sun. During these times when it is at its hottest, we must avoid swimming,” she said.
