RIDING high on his latest triumph, Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire will face compatriot John Riel Casimero “Cuadro Alas” in what promises to be an intriguing unification title clash for the world bantamweight crown on Aug. 14 at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson City.
Donaire announced this yesterday on his Facebook account after successful negotiations between his promoter, Richard Schaefer, and his wife Rachel and Sean Gibbons, MP Promotion’s chief, who handles Casimero.
“The invite was from @knucklehead Sean of MP Promotions @Filipinoflash ‘Nonito Donaire, you want some of this, it’s here for u. So I just pressed on the invite. Me and Richard (Schaefer) talked and worked Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo, Aug. 14 Switcheroo,” the boxer shared of his wife’s tweet of the talks that took place.
The “switcheroo” being referred to is Donaire replacing veteran Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux, Casmimero’s original rival who will now have to cool his heels and will likely await the winner of the unification title bout.
Casimero retweeted a news report of the successful negotiations on his Twitter to confirm the epic development featuring the encounter between the two reigning Filipino world bantamweight champions tangling for the first time in history.
At stake will be the World Boxing Organization bantamweight strap of Casimero and the World Boxing Council bantamweight crown of Donaire, who took the title last just May 29 with a fourth-round knockout of erstwhile unbeaten Frenchman Nordine Oubaali.
