AN official of the Department of Labor and Employment yesterday said there has been an increase in the hiring of senior citizens.
“We notice that the number of employed senior citizens is improving. When we say senior citizens, it would refer to 65 years old and over,” Labor Assistant Secretary Dominique
Tutay said in an interview at the sidelines of the 86th DOLE Anniversary Trabaho Negosyo Kabuhayan (TNK) Job and Business Fair in Pasay City.
She said numbers in the Labor Force Survey showed about 1.8 million individuals aged 65 and older were employed as of 2018, compared to some 1.5 million in 2013.
He said the rise in senior citizen employment could be attributed to the realization of employers that senior citizens can still be assets to a company.
“The private sector is already recognizing the contribution of senior citizens. They realize that they can still contribute to the company,” said Tutay.
“For one, the wisdom of the senior citizens is different. They could also provide advice to the company that employed them,” she added.
Yesterday, fast food giant McDonald’s signed a memorandum of agreement with the Pasay City government for the employment of senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Under the MOA, McDonald’s will hire two senior citizens and one PWD in each of its 40 stores in Pasay City.
