ON the heels of the death of two workers, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has issued a Work Stoppage Order on the passenger elevator of Burgundy Corporate Tower in Makati City.
In its two-page order, the DOLE-National Capital Region ordered the principal, contractor, and sub-contractor involved in the elevator works to immediately halt their activities.
“Failure to comply with this Order is a criminal offense punishable under Article 288 of the Labor Code of the Philippines,” said DOLE-NCR Director Sara Buena Mirasol.
Mirasol said the WSO was issued in relation to the presumed “imminent danger” in the building.
The passenger elevator at the Burgundy Corporate Tower collapsed last July 8, resulting in the death of two workers who were doing repair work.
Based on the Routine Inspection and Occupational
Safety and Health Investigation activities conducted by DOLE-NCR, several violations were identified.
These included having no Construction Safety and Health Program; Company OSH Program; trained Safety Officer; Certified First Aider; conduct of safety orientation or tool box meeting; conduct of safety orientation or tool box meeting; Annual Medical Report; and Annual Work Accident/Illness Exposure Data Report (2021).
Aside from the two workers killed, two others were injured when an elevator car fell from the 38th floor to the basement while they were fixing the elevator on the sixth floor.
