AMID the high heat indexes exceeding 40°C recorded in different parts of the country the past days, the Department of Health (DOH) yesterday warned the public against the threat of heat-related illnesses, especially heat stroke.

Heat stroke is a serious illness that occurs when the body temperature rises rapidly above 40°C, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down.

The DOH said untreated heat stroke can quickly damage one’s brain, heart, kidneys, and muscles.

To avoid suffering from heat-related illnesses, the DOH issued tips to help the public in beating the heat.

First in the list is to refrain from going outdoors at noon time, when the heat index is at its peak.

“If you have errands, do it early in the morning or late in the afternoon,” it said.

For those exposed outdoors, the health department said they should stay hydrated by drinking enough water.

It likewise urged the public to wear light clothes and remove additional layers of clothing.

The DOH said people outdoors who are experiencing heat exhaustion should move to shaded areas, such as under the trees and covered places, like shopping malls.

For those at home and feeling uncomfortably warm, the DOH advised that they put cold compress in the armpits, neck, back, and groin area to make them feel more comfortable.

DOH undersecretary and spokesman Eric Tayag said no one is spared from being threatened by heat stroke, especially senior citizens and those constantly exposed to the sun.

“Even those at home with not enough ventilation or insulation could be at risk from it,” he said.
