WITH summer officially in our midst, the Department of Health (DOH) yesterday advised the public to stay hydrated at all times.
In a televised public briefing, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said it is important for everyone to drink water to avoid dehydration, heat stroke and the like.
“Drink water frequently while avoiding too much exposure to the sun so that you will avoid heat stroke, heat exhaustion, or dehydration,” Duque said, adding the call is especially directed to senior citizens, who have low thirst sensitivity.
“The elderly are having difficulty feeling thirsty. This is why even if they are in need of water, they don’t ask for water,” said Duque.
Aside from staying hydrated, the health chief said the public should avoid going outdoors from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“If it cannot be avoided, put sunblock so that you’ll have additional protection. You may also use umbrellas when going out,” said Duque.
Last Wednesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) declared the start of the dry season, or summer.
