DOH reports nearly 1.5K new HIV cases in January

THE Department of Health (DOH) yesterday reported 1,454 new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases were recorded in the country last January to open year 2023.

The latest HIV/AIDS Registry of the Philippines report indicated the average cases per day in January 2023 was at 46.

Of the detected cases, 422 had advanced HIV infection at the time of diagnosis,

Additionally, the health department said there were 39 deaths due to HIV infection reported in January 2023.

Sexual contact is the most common mode of transmission, with 1,431 cases.

Broken down, male-to-male sex accounted for 998 cases, sex with male and female accounted for 240 cases, while male-to-female sex account for 193 cases.

The other modes of transmission were mother-to-child with 6, sharing of infected needles with 3, while 14 have no data available.

More than a quarter of the new cases (397) came from the National Capital Region, followed by 233 from Calabarzon, 194 from Central Luzon, 94 from Central Visayas, and 91 from Western Visayas.

“These regions comprised 69 percent of the total number of cases during this period,” said the DOH.
