THE Department of Health (DOH) said 277 firecracker-related injuries stemming from the New Year celebration have been recorded as of 6 a.m. yesterday.
“These were 49% higher compared to 2021 (186 cases),” said a report of the DOH’s Fireworks-Related Injury Surveillance 2022 that showed 15 additional injuries yesterday.
The DOH on Tuesday reported 51 additional injuries, bringing the total to 262 which it said was 42 percent higher compared to 2021.
In the latest report, the DOH said the firecrackers that caused the most injuries were “kwitis” with 57, “boga” with 33, and “5-star” with 22. Unknown fireworks caused 17 injuries.
Hand injuries were the most common cases with 99, followed by eyes (78), heads (37), and legs with 35.
Of the 277 injuries, 136 involved those who actually used firecrackers.
The DOH also reported that 47 of those injured were intoxicated.
Also, 151 injuries occurred in the streets while 115 others happened at home.
By regions, the National Capital Region (Metro Manila) had the most cases with 132 followed by Western Visayas with 33, Ilocos Region with 25, and Central Luzon with 23.
