DOH pushes for ban on vape products

INSTEAD of just prohibiting disposable vapes, the Department of Health (DOH) yesterday said it would be better if all vape products were banned in the country.

In a statement, the DOH said it is in full support of the proposal of Finance Secretary Ralph Recto to ban disposable vapes in the country.

“The DOH supports the proposal of the Secretary of Finance to ban disposable vapes, in particular, and vapor products, in general,” said the DOH.

“The Secretary of Finance only proposed to ban disposable vapes. The DOH supports that, in addition to its own perspective that all vapes should be banned,” it added.

“Disposable vapes and vapor products pose significant health risks, including e-cigarette or vapor product associated (with) lung injury (EVALI), nicotine addiction, and respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, among others,” it said.

The agency also noted that disposable vapes are made using plastic and batteries, which are not easily recyclable or biodegradable.

“These items result in electronic waste (e-waste) that contains harmful chemicals that can seep into soil and water sources, posing risks to both the environment and public health,” said the DOH.

Recto earlier said they are exploring the option of prohibiting disposable vapes in the country due to their unregulated sales, tax evasion, and significant health risks.
