THE Department of Health (DOH) yesterday assured the public that there is no meningococcemia outbreak in Batangas, saying one confirmed case in Tanauan City and three suspected cases are “isolated cases.”

“Just as before, we have these cases every once in a while. But not the kind where it is really widespread and there is clustering of meningococcemia cases in a particular area,” DOH-Calabarzon director Dr. Eduardo Janairo said.

“We don’t have an outbreak. These are just isolated cases,” he added, noting that the cases happened in towns “far apart from each other.”

A 53-year-old female from Tanauan was confirmed to have died from meningococcemia last September 21.

The disease, Janairo said, was confirmed by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM).

Meningococcemia is an acute and potentially life-threatening bacterial infection of the bloodstream, usually affecting a person’s upper respiratory tract without causing visible signs of illness.

It can be spread from person-to-person through respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing, kissing, or sharing foods, drinks, and utensils.

Three other deaths from suspected meningococcemia have also been reported — a 2-year-old male from Nasugbu, a 1-year-old female from Lian, and a 46-year-old male from San Jose.
