THE Department of Health (DOH) is warning the public against self-medicating sore eyes, saying it may lead to secondary infection.
Sore eyes is among the diseases common during the hot season. It is a viral inflammation of the outer membrane of the eyeball and the inner eyelid.
Its symptoms include the eyes turning red and watery coupled with a prickly sensation.
“Don’t use eye drops or put ointment because it may worsen the condition of your eyes,” said Dr. Rosalind Vianzon, chief of the DOH Health Environment Division, said in an online media forum last Friday.
“When it is watery or is having discharge, this means infection. Thus, it may worsen and even develop secondary infection,” said Vianzon.
Vianzon said the best way to handle sore eyes is to go to medical professionals who can give the proper prescription. — Gerard Naval
