THE Department of Health (DOH) has expressed support to a proposal to legitimize the “ukay-ukay” trade, saying it would help ensure that used products being sold are safe and up to standards.

In a press briefing last Tuesday, DOH Officer-in-Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said they are in favor of the proposal of Sen. Raffy Tulfo if it would mean preventing infectious diseases entering the country and being transmitted through used clothing.

“When you legitimize, or make this kind of trade legitimate, there will now be standards for that. Since it is already legitimate, it will now be part of our institutionalized system and there will be standards to check if they are safe for our people and if they are of quality,” said Vergeire.

“So by doing this, I think we will be agreeing to this proposal of the senator so that it will be safer for our people,” she added.

Vergeire said legalizing the “ukay-ukay” trade would mean that safety standards will be put in place to prevent disease transmission, among others.

“By this move to legitimize this business, we can prevent these kinds of health risks from happening because it can now be ensured that these products are safe for our people when they buy it,” Vergeire said.
