THE Department of National Defense yesterday said it is procuring 90 units of Russian-made trucks, worth P324 million, for the use of Army soldiers in combat operations.
Defense spokesman Arsenio Andolong said the trucks, being acquired under the Army’s Truck Troop Carrier Light project, are due for delivery within the year.
Andolong said a notice of award has been issued to ConEquip Philippines Inc. last Feb. 11, which won a public bidding, after its passed requirements set under Republic Act 9184 or the Government Procurement Act.
Andolong said the company will deliver the trucks made by URAL of the Russian Federation.
“These trucks will surely boost the Army’s capability to transport personnel and materiel wherever they are needed, whether it be in combat or humanitarian assistance and disaster response,” Andolong said.
The Philippine Army is in the forefront in the fight against various internal security threats, including the communist New People’s Army which has about 3,000 members.
The Army is also leading the fight against several terrorist groups like the Abu Sayyaf, Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, and the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group. These groups have a combined strength of about 300 to 500 men.
