THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) yesterday said the Philippines and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are set to hold a dialogue to further advance labor relations.

There are almost a million Filipinos working in the UAE.

The DMW said officer-in-charge Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac and UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) Minister Abdulrahman Al Awar met in Dubai on December 1 on the margins of the COP28 conference.

“During the meeting, the officials agreed to soon hold a joint committee meeting to discuss further areas of cooperation and explore development measures, which promote the mutual interests of both countries,” they said in a joint statement.

The specific agenda has yet to be set. However, during the initial meeting, Minister Al Awar discussed the new UAE savings system that allows Filipino workers to invest their end-of-service benefits and increase those benefits in established investment portfolios.

The MOHRE head also updated Cacdac on the new UAE policy on unemployment benefits.

“MOHRE Minister Abdulrahman Al Awar reassured OIC Hans Leo Cacdac that the UAE continues to be a favorable environment for OFWs,” said the joint statement.

“In return, OIC Cacdac welcomed the support of the UAE, and committed to continuously engage with the MOHRE for the benefit of OFWs,” it added.

Cacdac is part of the Philippine delegation to the 2023 United Nations 28th Conference of Parties (COP28) held in Dubai, UAE.
