WITH different kinds of scams emerging, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is stepping up its gameplan against scammers targeting overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families.

In a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed in Taguig City last Monday, the DMW has partnered with the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) to help combat illegal recruiters and investment scammers.

“Before, it was only illegal recruitment. But now, it has expanded to human trafficking, investment scams, consumer fraud, and other ways to scam our OFWs and OFW families,” DMW officer-in-charge Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac said in a statement.

“We will partner with the CICC in focusing on these problems of OFWs and OFW families in terms of scams or frauds they face,” he added.

The DMW chief said the strengthened effort is necessary as OFWs and their families deserve to be protected given the sacrifices they are making.

Similarly, he said such activities are unacceptable and must not be allowed to proliferate further.

“An OFW only wants to provide better lives for their families and the country. Unfortunately, there are those that take advantage of our OFWs to get their money and drain their hard-earned income and resources,” he said.

Under the MOA, CICC will help provide information on the different forms of scams used in the Pre-Employment Orientation Seminars (PEOS), Pre-Departure Orientation Seminars (PDOS), and Post-Arrival Orientation Seminars (PAOS) being conducted by the DMW.

The partnership is seen to result to OFWs being provided advanced notifications on budding or emerging scams so they can warn their respective families.
