THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) yesterday said it would look into reports that members of the Chinese mafia have been trafficking overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Myanmar.

In a televised public briefing, DMW Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac said they are already coordinating with different government agencies to tackle the alleged diversion of OFWs originally recruited to work in Thailand.

“We are closely coordinating not just with the Office of Senator Risa Hontiveros but also with law enforcement agencies and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA),” said Cacdac.

“Rest assured that the DMW is closely monitoring the status of the concerned OFWs,” he added.

Cacdac likewise said they now attending to the needs of the 12 OFWs rescued in Myanmar.

The workers were recruited to work as call center representatives in Thailand but ended up in Myanmar as crypto currency “scammers” allegedly run by the Chinese mafia.

“These OFWs need the help, and we are among the agencies that will provide assistance to them,” he said.

“(DMW) Secretary (Susan) Ople0has ordered the provision of airport assistance, accommodation assistance, legal assistance, financial assistance, psychosocial counseling,” Cacdad said.

Last Monday, Hontiveros bared that members of the Chinese mafia have been supposedly engaged in the trafficking of OFWs.

Hontiveros alleged that this is part of the organization’s plan to create an all-Filipino team of scammers in Myanmar.
