INTERIOR Secretary Eduardo Año yesterday ordered local government officials down to the barangayto clear all roads and highways of obstruction within 75 daysso these can be used by the public.
Año’s order, contained in Memorandum Circular 2020-027, is similar to last year’s 60-day operation which cleared 6,682 primary and secondary roads nationwide.
“Our `Disiplina Muna’ campaign in our roads will continue. I direct LGUs, especially barangays, to clear local roads and sustain the gains of the road-clearing operations…I am giving you 75 calendar days to do this,” said Año.”This will continue whether you like it or not.”
Año’s order last year was directed mainly at mayors. Ten of the mayors were charged administratively before the Office of the Ombudsman early this year for failing to comply with Año’sorder.
“Now, we will not only validate the performance of the mayor but also of the barangay captains,” said Año.
“We recognize that the barangays have the No. 1 responsibility in keeping their roads obstruction-free so under Road Clearing 2.0, we will also assess the performance of the barangays and file appropriate charges if necessary,” he added.
Año expressed confidence more roads will be cleared this year, citing the success of last year’s endeavor.
