THE Department of Education yesterday said it will not purchase books this year and will instead focus on self-learning modules that be used for the first and second quarters of the coming school year.
In a Viber message, DepEd Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio said the budget allocation of the agency for 2020 has been earmarked for modules, adding available textbooks will be used for supplemental learning.
He added that once the situation normalizes, or the COVID-19 pandemic eases, textbooks will be required anew.
He said the learning methods for the third and fourth quarters of the school year have yet to be discussed but added the DepEnd intends to seek the help of the private sector in developing the producing self-learning modules.
The DepEd has allowed public schools to use their maintenance and other operating expenses to produce self-learning modules for the first quarter of the new school year. — Noel Talacay
