THE Department of Education (DepEd) is set to present the state of basic education in the country along with the plans and programs of the department this year, or the Basic Education Report 2023 (BER), to President Marcos Jr. and his Cabinet on January 30.

Press briefer Daphne Oseña-Paez initially said the Deped will submit a “revised K to 12 curriculum” in the next meeting of the President and his Cabinet but the Presidential Communications Office later clarified that the BER will be presented.

There have been calls to scrap the K to 12 program following questions about its effectiveness in raising the quality of education in the country to make it at par with other countries.

DepEd, under Vice President Sara Duterte, was one of the departments that was supposed to report to the President and the Cabinet yesterday.

The other agencies were the Departments of Justice, Interior and Local Government, Agriculture, Energy, Labor and Employment, Social Welfare and Development, Agrarian Reform, Health, Migrant Workers, Environment and Natural Resources, and Science and Technology.

In a statement, DepEd said the “BER 2023 aims to present the state of basic education in the country, and the plans and initiatives of the Department to fulfill its mandate.”

It added that DepEd also intends to provide a “broad report about the basic education sector that will include updates on the ongoing review of the K to 12 curriculum. The BER will also launch the education agenda and the new call to action for all Filipinos.
