THE Department of Education yesterday said two students in South Cotabato and Iloilo died recently, including one who was murdered as she headed home from school.
In a statement, DepEd said the 10-year-old student was killed in Tupi, South Cotabato after attending her class.
“There is simply no place for such brutality in our society. We reiterate our call to local authorities to strengthen efforts in ensuring the safety and security in our communities,” the DepEd said.
Though it did not provide additional details, the department said it is working with local police authorities to arrest the perpetrator.
In a separate statement, DepEd said it is also mourning the death of a Grade 10 student in Maasin, Iloilo. The student, according to DepEd, “ sadly passed away” last May 10.
Last month, a Grade 8 student from Agoncillo, Batangas was shot dead by an unidentified suspect near her school.
This was followed by the killing of a 14-year-old student in Talisay, Cebu.
While it did not provide details, the department said the child protection committee of the school where the student was studying is “set to conduct psychosocial interventions” for affected peers and teachers.
It also appealed to the public to refrain from spreading unconfirmed narratives while the official police report has yet to be released as a sign of respect to the grieving family.
