THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) yesterday welcomed the successful conduct of the plebiscites in Marawi City, saying it is clear proof that democracy is “thriving” in the war-torn Islamic city.

In a statement on late Saturday, the Comelec pointed at the “historic” 93.73 percent turnout of the plebiscites held in Barangays Dulay Proper, Kilala, and Patani.

“The successful conduct of these plebiscites attest to the commitment of the Comelec to faithfully perform its mandate of ensuring that the people’s voices are heard in every electoral exercise, be it local or national in scale,” said the Comelec.

“The historic high voter turnout and the resounding ‘yes’ votes clearly show that democracy is not merely alive, but vibrant and thriving in the Islamic City of Marawi,” it also said.

On Saturday, the Comelec held the plebiscites for the proposed creation of Barangays Sultan Corobong, Sultan Panoroganan, and Angoyao into distinct and independent barangays in Marawi City.

Out of the 2,265 registered voters of the three barangays, a total of 2,123 voters cast their votes.

The results showed that 2,121 voters gave ‘yes’ votes to ratify the creation of the three new barangays while only two voted ‘no.’

For Barangay Sultan Corobong, which was created from Barangay Dulay Proper, 387 out of the 395 registered voters voted “yes” for a 97.97 percent voter turnout.

For Barangay Sultan Panoroganan, which came from Barangay Kilala, 597 out of 635 registered voters agreed to the proposal, for a 94.01 percent voter turnout.
