SEN. Ronald dela Rosa has refiled his proposed measure seeking to impose the capital punishment on large-scale drug traffickers “in order to save the lives” of Filipinos.
Senate Bill No. 198 is one of the priority measures filed by dela Rosa during the 18th Congress.
“This is a must in order to save lives of these Filipinos, that one person must pay for it. Let us save the lives of our countrymen by imposing the death penalty on these big-time drug traffickers,” dela Rosa said.
Section 3 of the bill states that large-scale illegal trafficking is committed by any person who illegally cultivates, cultures, delivers, manufactures, sells, trades, transports, distributes, imports, exports and possesses any dangerous drug and/or controlled precursor and essential chemical involving a quantity of not less than five kilos or more, unless authorized by law.
He said he wants capital punishment for large-scale drug traffickers since just one drug activity can destroys thousands of lives.
“Death penalty is legal. It is written in the Constitution that we can impose the death penalty. So, we might as well bring it back to instill fear on high-level drug traffickers,” he added.
Capital punishment was reinstated under the Ramos administration but was suspended by President Gloria Arroyo in 2006.
