FROM just six last Monday, the Department of Health reported 92 more deaths yesterday along with 8,560 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases, a figure that did not include data from 13 laboratories that did not submit data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System (CDRS) last August 8.

In its latest bulletin, the DOH said the total number of infections in the country rose to 1,676,156 while the toll climbed to 29,220, just 80 short of the grim 3,000 mark, for a case fatality rate of 1.74.

Active cases rose to 79,016 from 78,480 last Monday, with 94.4 percent mild cases, 1.7 percent asymptomatic cases, 1.7 percent severe cases, 1.1 percent moderate cases, and 1 percent critical cases.

The DOH also reported 7,964 more recoveries, raising the number of survivors to 1,567,920.

Seventeen months into the pandemic, over 640,000 overseas Filipino workers have been repatriated by the Department of Labor and Employment.

In an online press briefing, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said that, as of August 9, 641,717 OFWs have returned home to their families.

He said less than 10,000 are also currently staying in various hotel quarantine facilities under the care of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.

Under the existing protocol, all returning OFWs are required to undergo a 10-day quarantine in a government-approved hotel/facility upon arrival, with RT-PCR testing required on the seventh day.

If the COVID-19 test turns out negative, the returning OFWs will be allowed to go home. Fully vaccinated OFWs will be required to undergo a 7-day quarantine, with RT-PCR testing done on the fifth day.
