THREE days after the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases breached the half-million mark in the country, the Department of Health reported another grim milestone yesterday — over 10,000 deaths.
In its latest bulletin, the DOH said 64 more patients succumbed to the deadly virus, raising the number of fatalities to 10,042, for a case fatality rate of 1.98 percent.
The DOH also reported 1,862 new cases, with the total number of infections now up to 505,939. Last Sunday, the number of new cases in the country went over the 500,000 mark.
Zamboanga City reported 206 new cases, Davao City 109, Kalinga 102, Quezon City 77, and Benguet 74.
There were 765 more recoveries, raising the number of survivors to 466,993.
There were 28,904 active cases, 84.9 percent of them mild cases, 7.5 percent asymptomatic cases, 4.5 percent critical cases, 2.6 percent severe cases, and 0.39 percent moderate cases.
The DOH said two testing laboratories failed to submit data on time and were not included in the updated tally.
Nineteen more overseas Filipinos have been infected with the COVID virus while three more have died, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.
In all, the number of overseas Filipinos sickened by the virus and those who have died climbed to 13,624 and 944, respectively.
The DFA said there were 61 new recoveries, bringing the number of survivors to 8,745.
The DFA added that on the second week of January it was able to bring home 7,149 overseas Filipinos who “continue to be stranded abroad due to COVID 19 travel restrictions.” Of this, 984 were sea-based workers while 6, 165 were land-based. — With Ashzel Hachero
