SEN. Leila de Lima was discharged on Sunday from the Manila Doctors’ Hospital in Manila after undergoing a major surgery for “pelvic organ prolapse stage 3.”

De Lima’s camp said the opposition senator was escorted out of the hospital by police officers who transported her back to her detention cell at the PNP Custodial Center in Camp Crame.

De Lima was brought to the hospital on Monday last week on the advice of her physician after she was diagnosed with pelvic organ prolapse stage 3 during her medical checkup last April 5.

The Muntinlupa City regional trial court, which is hearing the government’s drug charges against the senator, granted De Lima a medical furlough from June 19 to 25 to undergo “vaginal hysterectomy with anterior colporraphy” and give her ample time to recover.

“The operation was successful and (she) is currently recovering,” De Lima’s camp said.

De Lima has been detained since February 2017 on allegations linking her to illegal drug activities at the New Bilibid Prison when she was still the secretary of the Department of Justice.

Three witnesses — self-confessed drug lord Kerwin Espinosa, former Bureau of Corrections officer-in-charge Rafael Ragos, and driver/aide Ronnie Dayan — who have formerly linked her to the narcotics trade have already recanted their statements against her.
