MORE than 12,000 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases were reported by the Department of Health (DOH) yesterday, along with 119 more deaths that raised the toll to 39,624, just 376 short of hitting the grim mark of 40K.

In its latest bulletin, the DOH said the number of infections in the country climbed to 2,666,562, counting the 12,159 new cases.

The positivity rate stood at 15.9 percent out of the 53,880 tests conducted last October 8 while the case fatality rate stood at 1.49.

There were 90,927 active cases, with 72.2 percent mild cases, 16.2 percent asymptomatic cases, 6.7 percent moderate cases, 3.4 percent severe cases, and 1.4 percent critical cases.

The DOH also reported 27,727 more recoveries, raising the number of survivors to 2,536,011.

President Duterte has not been exposed to presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, who is now in isolation after testing positive for the coronavirus disease, and caring for other family members in need of medical attention.

“PRRD (President Duterte) was never exposed,” Presidential Security Group Commander Randolph Cabangbang said when asked how the President is and if he and some PSG members need to undergo isolation as well.

The President went home to Davao City last Friday.

The office of Duterte-Carpio on Saturday night said the mayor was in isolation and “everyone who came in close contact with Mayor Sara in the last 14 days is hereby advised to self-monitor for symptoms and get RT-PCR tested five to seven days from your contact with her.”

Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula announced yesterday his full recovery from the deadly virus and credited the vaccine in helping him survive the dreaded disease.

“Dear brothers, I am among the over 2 million Filipinos afflicted with COVID-19. I also experienced fear and difficulties of this illness,” Advincula said in a taped video message.

“Thank the Lord, the Virgin Mary, and St Joseph, I was able to recover from this illness,” he added.

Advincula said he believes he was able to recover due to his being fully vaccinated.

“I was able to prove that being vaccinated against COVID-19 can make a big difference,” said Advincula, who tested positive for the virus last September. — With Jocelyn Montemayor
