COVID cases in PH breach P27K mark

MORE than 400 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases were confirmed yesterday by the Department of Health (DOH) as the outbreak continued to surge in the Philippines.

In all, 457 new cases were reported yesterday, bringing the country’s total to 27,238.

Of the newly-reported cases, 342 were “fresh cases” while the other 115 were identified as “late cases.”

“Fresh cases” refer to test results that came out and were validated by the DOH – Epidemiology Bureau in the last three days, while “late cases” are those whose laboratory results came out four days ago or more but were just recently validated by the DOH.

Five more fatalities were recorded yesterday, bringing to 1,108 the total number of COVID-19 deaths in the country.

The DOH also reported 268 new cases of recoveries, bringing to 6,820 the total of COVID-19 patients who have recovered from the deadly disease.

Meanwhile, the Department of Foreign Affairs reported that 56 more overseas Filipinos were infected with the disease, bringing the total number so far to 6,074 in 54 countries.

Ten new recoveries were reported for a total recovery figure of 2,842 while there were 24 new deaths recorded in the Americas, Europe and the Middle East. The total death toll so far among overseas Filipinos stands at 466.

The DFA data also showed the Middle East continued to have the highest recorded COVID-19 cases of Filipinos at 3, 916 as well as in fatalities at 207. But it also recorded the highest number of recoveries at 1,691.

Though the Americas came in third in the number of cases with 683 compared to Europe’s 906, it registered the second highest number of deaths among Filipinos at 164. Europe recorded 93 deaths.

The Asia-Pacific region registered 569 cases and two deaths.

The Bureau of Corrections said 61 more inmates or persons deprived of liberty have recovered from the disease and have been returned to their respective cells Wednesday.

Of the 61, the BuCor said 5 were from the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prison where most of the prisoners are convicted of drug trafficking and other heinous crimes; 1 came from the medium security compound; 42 came from the maximum security compound and 13 from the NBP’s Reception and Diagnostic Center where newly-arrived inmates get acquainted with prison rules before they are assigned their respective cells.

On Monday, BuCor spokesman Gabriel Chaclag said 130 PDLs and 19 staff who had tested positive for the virus also recovered. — With Ashzel Hachero
