COVID-19 cases nearly 23,000

THE Department of Health yesterday reported 518 new cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), bringing the total number of infections since February to 22,992.

Of the new cases, 280 are considered “fresh cases” while 238 as “late cases.”

“Fresh cases” refer to test results that came out and were validated by the DOH’s Epidemiology Bureau in the last three days while “late cases” are those whose laboratory results came out four days ago or more but were just recently validated by the DOH.

The DOH also reported six new fatalities, for a total of 1,017 deaths, and 99 more patients who have recovered from the disease, or a total of 4,736 recoveries.

Globally, World Health Organization data shows there have been 6,931,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 400,857 deaths, as of June 8.

Among Filipinos overseas, the Department of Foreign Affairs reported 12 new COVID-19 cases, nine new deaths, and 64 more recoveries.

With this, the number of infected Filipinos in 51 countries is now 5,401 while 2,295 have recovered and 380 have died.

The Middle East/Africa still has the highest number of COVID-19 cases among Filipinos at 3,354 followed by Europe with 856, Americas, with 664 and Asia and the Pacific with 527.

In terms of fatality, the Americas registered the highest with 153 followed by Middle East/Africa with 134, Europe with 91 and Asia and the Pacific with two. — With Ashzel Hachero
