PNP chief Dionardo Carlos has reminded all policemen to be responsible in handling their firearms after a Catanduanes policeman shot dead his wife and his child before killing himself last Saturday.

“We are sorry for the loss of lives. It is with sadness that we hear about the circumstances.

May this serve as a lesson for our police officers to take precautions and never put the law into their hands,” said Carlos.

Carlos said policemen underwent gun safety training and should use the knowledge they learned “to effectively and responsibly discharge your duty.”

“Our service firearms are used whenever necessary in our prime task as law enforcers.

Even during this election period, despite being given the gun ban exemption, PNP’s mandate for prudent gun use remains,” said Carlos.

Early morning Saturday, Patrolman Jaymar Malasa, 25, of the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company in Catanduanes, went home in Barangay Hawan Ilaya in Virac town after a drinking spree.

A heated argument with his wife, Joy, 28, led Malasa to shoot his wife in the head using his 9 mm service firearm, causing her death, in a fit of jealousy.

Police said the bullet that hit Joy also and subsequently hit their three-year-old son, Maray, who was being carried by Joey.

Police said Malasa shot himself dead using the same firearm.
