AHEAD of the resumption of the registration of voters on February 12, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) yesterday assured lawmakers that the current voters list is “practically clean” and no longer contains multiple registrants.
In a televised public briefing, Comelec spokesman John Rex Laudiangco said “the Comelec is continuously cleansing the voters list.”
“The current voters list we have is now practically clean,” he added.
Laudiangco said that prior to the conduct of the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), “almost 500,000 registration records have been cleansed from the voters list.”
The Comelec issued the assurance after House Assistant Majority Leader and Leyte 4th District Rep. Richard Gomez filed a resolution urging the poll body to cleanse and update its list of voters.
Under House Resolution (HR) No.1542, Gomez said it’s important for the Comelec to cleanse the voters list ahead of the voter registration period for the forthcoming 2025 midterm polls.
The Comelec has set the voter registration period from February 12 to September 30, 2024. It is expecting some three million new registered voters in the in the new voters list for the 2025 elections.
