THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) believes there could be more than three million new registered voters come the May 2025 national and local polls.
In an interview, Elections chairman George Garcia yesterday noted that just one month into the seven-month voter’s registration period, there are already 1,174,375 applicants to become registered voters who filed between February 12 to March 12.
The registration period will run until September 30 this year.
“It appears that our projection of three million will be exceeded, especially with September 30 still far off,” said Garcia, adding: “It looks like we will exceed and reach probably 3.4 to 3.5 million.”
“We are only a month into the voter registration period and yet we have over a million registering,” he also said.
Latest data from the Comelec show that the Calabarzon still has the most number of applicants at 213,757; followed by the National Capital Region with 174,954; and Central Luzon with 129,261.
Completing the top five are Central Visayas with 89,609; and Davao Region with 86,295.
Having the lowest number of registrants are the Cordillera Administrative Region with 12,641; Mimaropa with 23,953; and Caraga with 31,221.
