POLITICAL parties and party-list organizations looking to participate in the May 2025 polls have until December 29 to register with the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
In a statement, the Comelec advised all political parties and party-list groups to file their petitions for registration as soon as possible.
“The deadline for the filing of Petitions for Registration of political parties and party-lists in connection with the 2025 National and Local Elections is on 29 December 2023,” said the Comelec.
“All groups intending to register as a political party, a coalition of political parties, or a national, regional, or sectoral group or organization to participate in the party-list system of representation must ensure strict compliance with the guidelines,” it added.
It said the petitions for registration shall be filed via electronic mail to the Office of the Clerk of the Commission (clerkofthecommission@comelec.gov.ph), to be followed by the hard copies.
Verified petitions may already be filed from Mondays to Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Under the Omnibus Election Code (OEC), a political party must be duly registered with the Commission for it to acquire juridical personality, quality it for subsequent accreditation, and to entitle it to the rights and privileges granted to political parties.
The OEC said that a political party may file with the Commission a verified petition by attaching its constitution and by-laws, platform or program of government, and such other relevant information as may be required by the Commission.
On the other hand, the Party List System Law provides that an organized group of persons must register as a party, organization, or coalition while stating its desire to participate in the party-list system by filing a petition with the Comelec.
Republic Act No. 7941 said that such party-list organizations may file their petition by attaching its constitution, by-laws, platform or program of government, list of officers, coalition agreement and other relevant information as the Comelec may require.
