THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) yesterday condemned the brutal killing of its Election Officer (EO) in Sultan sa Barongis, Maguindanao, who was gunned down last Monday afternoon in Lambayong, Sultan Kudarat.
In a statement, the Comelec vowed to seek justice over the killing of Haviv M. Maindan for the sake of the family he had left behind.
“The Commission on Elections strongly condemns the brazen killing of Mr. Haviv M. Maindan, Election Officer II of Sultan sa Barongis, Maguindanao,” said the Comelec.
“The whole Commission on Elections committed to the family of EO Maindan that we will not rest until justice is served,” it added.
Based on initial reports, Maindan and one Rolly Dilangalen were traveling from Sultan sa Barongis to Lambayong aboard their vehicle when the assailants approached and shot them several times.
Maindan was hit in different parts of his body while Dilangalen miraculously did not sustain any gunshot wound. The assailants fled after the attack.
“Comelec is in cooperation with the Philippine National Police regarding this incident as they are already conducting hot pursuit operations while all personnel and checkpoints were alerted for possible arrest of the assailants,” the poll body said.
The Commission said Maindan, who is set to turn 56 next month, had served the agency for 15 years after being hired by the Comelec in 2007.
He left behind his wife and four children, all of whom are still in school.
“They all have lost a loving husband and an ever doting and caring father,” the Comelec said.
