WITH still more than three months before the December 2022 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), the Commission on Elections (Comelec) yesterday said it is already 80 percent prepared to hold the poll exercise.

In a televised public briefing, Elections chairman George Garcia said they are almost complete with their preparations despite the continued uncertainty if the December 5 polls will be postponed or not.

“Currently, we are already going all out with our preparations. It is as if there is no possibility that the BSKE will be postponed. As of now, we are almost at 80 percent in our preparations for the barangay and SK elections,” Garcia said.

He said the Comelec en Banc is already set to promulgate their resolutions detailing the guidelines for the December BSKE.

Add to this, he said, is the continued procurement of the election paraphernalia and supplies to be used for the polls.

Garcia said they are also ready to roll-out the printing of the official ballots for the BSKE at the National Printing Office.

Despite this, the poll chief said they do not expect Congress to be swayed by the Comelec’s readiness to conduct the elections in deciding whether to postpone it or not.

“It will not affect the decision of Congress whether they will postpone or proceed with the elections on December 5,” said Garcia.

Several bills are now pending in the Senate and the House of Representatives for the postponement of the December 2022 barangay and youth polls.
