COA chief to auditors: Stay safe, focused

THE Commission on Audit quietly celebrated its 121st anniversary on Monday , with Chairman Michael G. Aguinaldo and Commissioner Roland C. Pondoc exhorting government auditors and other agency personnel to stay safe in their homes amidst the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

In their messages, the two officials reminded the COA family that the quarantine is their chance to recharge in preparation for a lot of work once the ECQ is lifted and government work resumes.

Since the creation of the Office of the Auditor on May 8, 1899 through a memorandum signed by then United States President William McKinley, Aguinaldo said the COA duty has remained the same: ensure a healthy measure of prudence in governance through the judicious use of public funds.

“It is with a mixture of pride, gratitude and hope that I greet the entire COA family as we remember the 121st anniversary of our beloved institution. It is heartening to be reminded that we are part of an institution that has helped build a strong and independent nation that cares for the welfare of its people,” the chairman said.

He reiterated COA’s support for the government’s efforts in halting the further spread of the novel coronavirus while helping ensure that government workers receive their wages and that the distribution of relief goods is not unduly hampered.

“As we humbly celebrate the Commission’s 121st anniversary in the safety of our homes, I encourage everyone to mark this occasion with grateful hearts and a fresh determination to give our best as guardians of public funds and enablers of government in the efficient and effective delivery of public service,” Aguinaldo said.

Pondoc called for unity in praying that the pandemic will not worsen and move past soon.

“Let us also take this time to rest our bodies and minds, meditate and renew our faith for we have much work to do in the coming days. The Commission continues to be a partner of our country’s fight against the unseen enemy who has brought global fears about health, the financial situation, and safety,” Pondoc said.

He said the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy only made COA’s work all the more important.

“We are doing our part to help those in need and to continuously safeguard our country’s coffers, especially the government funds intended to respond to the current pandemic. As there is much work to be done in auditing COVID-19 funds, I am calling on our auditors and everyone to remain vigilant and to perform our mandated duties without fear or favor,” he said.
