John Lloyd Cruz – that’s the actor Claudine Barretto is reminded of upon seeing 18-year-old Star Magic talent Beaver Magtalas.

Claudine, tagged as the country’s “Optimum star,” said she noticed the range of emotions and depth of character of the young actor in his scenes in “When Magic Hurts,” a light romance set to open in theaters in May.

“He has lots of potential,” noted Claudine.

“Napakagaling nung bata. Very, very close sya sa mga anak ko,” added the actress.

Beaver, Claudine and her 7-year-old daughter Aryanna are together in “When Magic Hurts,” a summer love story directed by Gabby Ramos and showing in May.

At the movie’s press con last Wednesday, Claudine conceded that she has a tendency to be a stage mom to her child. A loving and protective mom, Claudine said it was actually not her idea for Aryanna to enter the business. She is just heartened to know Aryanna seems to be a natural in front of the camera. Someone even commented that the child looks like another talented actress, Judy Ann Santos. Comments such as these are music to Claudine’s ears.

Shot in picturesque Atok, Benguet, “When Magic Hurts” is a magical movie about young love. Beaver plays Ernesto Buenvaventura, a loving son and brother who is humble and obedient. His paths cross with that of Olivia (Mute Orquia), an orphan who was once a believer in magic but is now disillusioned.

Meanwhile, newcomer Maxine Trinidad plays Trixie Callejo, a strong-willed young lady who loves to learn and explore new things. She is quite adventurous and willing to take on new challenges but is also determined to do everything to get what she wants at any cost. With her intelligence, she has managed to get into prestigious schools in the United States with the help of her parents who will also do everything to give to their only child what she wants for herself.

“When Magic Hurts” also stars Dennis Padilla, Angelica Jones, Archie Adamos, Solimon Cruz, Aileen Papin, Jullian Roxas and Mohaira Sanama.
